Typography is design

I have to admit, before I took typography last semester, I never really thought of it as a "thing." I'm pretty sure I wasn't alone because when equally ignorant people would ask me what classes I was taking, when I answered "Typography" they'd be like "what! what is there to learn about that?!" Oh. So much. First of all, typography is this HUGE subject, as all of you know. But second of all, now that I know that typography is really a thing. It's EVERYWHERE. I feel like I was able to join this cool typography club, that's exclusive but actually has millions of members, and we all know how cool typography is but no one else really gets it.

Ok! So I'm babbling on about this because I came across this article in Smashing Magazine about how typography is 95% of web design. Obviously, images are very important, but with the advent of  all these new font selection services for web design, it's getting a lot easier to make type look terrible. That's why it's especially refreshing when a site has good typography, it's like a breath of fresh web air!

Go club typography!

  1. Amen! This sentence particularly resonates with me: "If anything, more font selection will make things worse for you because creativity and beauty become hard to achieves when more options are given to us." I do not perform well with too many choices. I prefer structure, formulas, strict guidelines.
