I always hear the joke: "since it's on the internet, it must be true," and I smile and nod because I know that I know better than to believe everything I read. Or I thought I did. Last week I was doing research on my food ingredient and I came across the pitch that I gave on Saturday, the "lemons" are good for mental health spiel. Well yesterday I sat down to get to the nitty gritty and start my rough draft. I did more extensive research than I did last week, obviously, and TWO sites had me fooled. Two of the sites that I used as "reliable sources" gave me the information that lemons can be made into balms and that is what can cure your depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc.
In actuality, lemon balm is an herb. An herb that has a lemony smell. And it is the HERB that is a mental health cure-all. After I got over my mortification of having to explain this to the class (which I decided I won't except for the 3 people that are obligated to read this post and comment on it), I decided that lemon balm is still a food ingredient, and I'm still going to write about it. It's too interesting of an idea to let go. But I can't believe that two different sites said lemon balm was associated with lemons. Don't people fact check these days? One of these sites is a .org, which I always thought automatically meant you were reputable. Nope. Sigh.
My whole design idea was ruined by this because instead of having images of lemons and yellowy things, I have to rethink my whole aesthetic. I'm sure no one knows what lemon balm even looks like. I obviously didn't. OK, let's never talk about this again.

Oh no! Well, at least you discovered this before you got to the next phase :) And I think you're right to use lemon balm (the herb) as your ingredient. Should make for an interesting read!
ReplyDeleteThat's probably why I seem so non-committal when we first discuss these things or look and sound like I didn't research very deeply. You find out new things and get different ideas...it's surprising how many projects look absolutely, positively nothing like the first concept. Lemon balm'll do it! :)
ReplyDeleteI like your writing style.... you make fun of yourself in an engaging way that makes me laugh. I think you could carry this whole mistaken identity experience into your article...
ReplyDeletethanks! :)
